Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is the neurologic re-education of the oral and facial muscles. This systematic treatment of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) utilizes a range of physical therapy exercises designed to enhance breathing, chewing, oral preparatory phase of swallowing, and facial posture, by focusing on the soft tissues of the face, neck, and mouth.
The therapy typically involves a combination of exercises and activities that target the muscles and structures involved in biting, chewing, swallowing, speaking, and breathing. These exercises are designed to retrain the muscles, improve oral posture, and correct harmful oral habits such as mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, and teeth grinding. We work cooperatively with other professionals including dentists, orthodontists, ENTs, TMJ specialists, speech therapists, and body work practitioners, to help you achieve optimal results.
